For a local business, Google reviews matter more than almost anything else online: they affect whether you appear on the map, whether people click and whether they eventually call. And collecting reviews is not luck but a system — the right link, the right moment and a simple message.
In short
Get the short review link from your Google Business Profile, turn it into a QR code and send it to customers right after a job well done, in a one-sentence message. Reply to every review. Never offer a discount or gift for a review — Google prohibits it.
1. Prepare your Google Business Profile
No verified profile, no reviews. If you don’t have one yet or are not sure it is set up correctly, first read how to appear on Google Maps. Check the name, category, opening hours, phone and photos — people leaving a review see those too.
2. Get the review link and create a QR code
- Open your Google Business Profile (search for your business name while signed in, or use the Google Maps app).
- Choose the option to ask for reviews (Ask for reviews) and copy the short link.
- Turn the link into a QR code and print it: at the reception, on the receipt, on business cards or product packaging.
The link opens the rating window directly — the customer doesn’t have to search for your business. That is the single biggest difference in the number of reviews.
3. Ask at the right moment
- Right after a good experience — when the customer says “that turned out great”, ask then.
- In person, then by message — a quick question face to face, the link by message the same day.
- Ask everyone, not only those you expect to give 5 stars. Selecting only happy customers breaks Google’s rules.
4. Message templates
SMS / WhatsApp: “Thanks for visiting us today! If you were happy, we’d really appreciate a short review — it takes 30 seconds: [link]”
Email after delivery: “Hello, we hope you’re happy with your [product/service]. Your honest opinion helps us and other customers. You can leave a review here: [link]. Thank you!”
If you use a booking system or app, this message can be sent automatically a few hours after the appointment — see online appointment booking and salon booking app.
5. Reply to every review
- Positive: short and personal — say thanks and mention the service, not the same template every time.
- Negative: within a day or two, calmly, without arguing. Acknowledge the problem, explain what you changed and offer contact. Future customers look at your reply more than at the review.
- Fake or abusive: report them to Google from your profile, and reply briefly and factually in the meantime.
What Google prohibits
- Discounts, gifts or rewards in exchange for reviews.
- Buying reviews, or reviews written by employees or family.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews.
On your website you can show selected reviews with a link to your Google profile — that builds trust. Google does not show stars from self-hosted reviews of local businesses in search results, so there is no point in “faking” them in code.
Want customers to find and rate you more easily?
I’ll look at your Google profile and website and suggest what to fix — from a review QR code to an automatic message after each appointment.
